Bike Accessories
![]() | Equipping your bike with some basic accessories will enable you to ride further and be prepared for any emergencies en route. Spare inner tube - Carry a spare tube at all times. If you get a puncture fitting a new tube is the quickest and easiest way to get you on the road again. The puncture can then be repaired at the end of your ride or later at home. When buying a tube ensure you choose the right size and valve type - click here for advice. |
Tyre levers - Tyre levers will allow you to quickly remove the tyre from your wheel rim to fix a puncture.
Puncture repair kits - A puncture repair kit allows you to patch any punctures that you have in your tube. Glueless repair kits are increasingly popular and very easy to use. Or traditional repair kits are also available.
Mini pump - a small frame mounted mini pump is another essential item. These pumps attach to most bike frames and quickly pump up big tyres AND repairing a puncture without them is impossible!
Multitool – Multi tools are like having a tool box in your back pocket. These compact tools allow you to adjust and fix your bike out on the road or trail. Simple ones have allen keys and screwdrivers, more complex tools feature chain breakers and pliers and more!
Bottles & Hydration packs - Staying hydrated is essential when riding. The most popular way of carrying water while cycling is by fitting a bottle cage to your bike and carrying a water bottle. Hydration packs such as Camelbak are great for carrying larger amounts of liquid and also provide storage for tools, food and clothes.
Saddle pack - If you’re not riding with a backpack or hydration pack a saddle pack is a great way of carrying your essential items while riding. These packs fit under your bike seat and range from very small (for carrying a spare tube and levers) through to larger expandable packs.
Slick tyres - Chunky mountain bike tyres add unnecessary weight and rolling resistance when riding on the road. For those of you that will be riding mountain bikes at the Bikeathon the easiest way to make your bike lighter and faster is to fit some slick tyres.
